The Story of World Sangeeth Day
From Four Cities to a Global Celebration
World Sangeeth Day began with a celebration—and a vision to take it around the world..
On June 21, 2026, IMD Foundation presented the inaugural IMD Sangeeth Day, bringing together Indian classical music and dance communities across four locations in the United States: Wappingers Falls (Hudson Valley), New York; Atlanta, Georgia; Seattle, Washington; and Boston, Massachusetts.
More than 100 performers took part in the celebrations, representing the remarkable diversity of Indian classical arts—from Carnatic and Hindustani music to Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Odissi. Hundreds of rasikas, families, students, teachers, and supporters joined the festivities, creating a vibrant celebration of music, dance, tradition, and community.
What made Sangeeth Day especially meaningful was its inclusive spirit. Rather than celebrating a single tradition or art form, it brought different traditions of Indian classical music and dance together under one banner, giving established artists, emerging performers, teachers, and students an opportunity to share the stage and celebrate the rich cultural heritage they collectively represent.
The enthusiastic response from performers, participants, and audiences made one thing clear: this celebration deserved to grow.
Inspired by the success of the inaugural events and encouraged by suggestions and support from participants, IMD Foundation expanded the vision and initiated World Sangeeth Day—an annual global celebration of Indian classical music and dance.
Today, the vision of World Sangeeth Day is simple yet ambitious: to bring communities around the world together on one special weekend each year to celebrate the arts, honor gurus and teachers, provide opportunities for artists and learners, connect performers with rasikas, and inspire future generations to embrace and carry forward these timeless traditions.
What began in four American cities is now a global invitation: come together, celebrate, and help carry the extraordinary traditions of Indian classical music and dance into the future.
